“The purpose of School Council is, through the active participation of parents, to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents”
– Ontario Regulation 612/00 of the Education Act
Huntley Centennial School Council provides a forum for all parents/guardians to have involvement in their children’s school. All parents, volunteers, and community members can interact with the school principal and staff and advise them on matters important to their child’s education, and hear what is happening at the school and board level.
School Council meetings are held regularly and announced well ahead of time. All parents/guardians and interested members of the community are encouraged to attend the meetings and express their views – or just listen to see what is going on at Huntley Centennial. Your involvement will enrich you and your child’s school experience. Any time or expertise you can lend is greatly appreciated!
Membership on the School Council is open to all parents/guardians of students enrolled in the school plus community representatives, teachers and administrative/support staff. The composition of our Council attempts to reflect the diversity of the community it serves. Certain members of Council are elected annually by their peers at the first Council meeting of the school year. These roles come with specific responsibilities throughout the school year and require various time commitments.
At the start of each academic school year, the School Council discusses fundraising and budgetary goals for the coming year. This allows the school council to fund school-related activities as well as fund raise for additional requests where existing school dollars are not available.
We encourage parents and community members to become involved, as volunteers, guest experts, field trip helpers, event/fundraising organizers, or as member of our dynamic School Council. The more the merrier!
Parents are an integral part of their children’s education and are always welcomed into the school. There are many opportunities for parents to have direct or indirect involvement.
Some areas where parents are presently involved include:
- being members at large
- volunteering in classrooms
- participating in special events
- helping out on field trips
- co-ordinating and serving hot lunches: Pizza Day/Subway//Milk programs
- organising or volunteering to help with annual fundraising activities (e.g. Christmas bazaar)
- participating as part of the Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony Committee
- volunteering at the bi-annual Book Fair
- sharing their work at our annual Intermediate Career Day
Research consistently bears out that parent involvement and student success go hand in hand – so get involved and have fun with your kids!
We invite the community to teach us, to learn with us, and to embrace this school by visiting frequently and becoming meaningfully involved.
